Within each style of Tai Chi, there are several forms to learn, which is classed as student progression. Once you begin this wonderful journey, you discover a path filled with potential. After spending some years learning the forms, you will also discover the diamond hidden within the heart, an incredible part of you that begins to grow and shine, regardless of how difficult the path of learning becomes.

To set out the grand scale of learning for you, you at first must start at the beginning. This is because to learn and absorb Tai Chi correctly, we have undo many years of having put our bodies and minds through daily living, encountering life changing obstacles and desiring a sense of freedom from within.

Most people take up Tai Chi for health and relaxation, which the Yang style it is renowned for. However the martial art side of Tai Chi still exists today, but this will depend on the style and the teacher. For example, I do not teach the martial art of Tai Chi, for sure though I will show the application, but not ask students to engage with each other. When I am challenged about this aspect, my answer is always to clearly state, that there is only one true fight to focus on, which is the fight to live your life to the full. This is the way to fulfil your full potential and raise your spirit by not being afraid to live your life as being you.

A student can expect to start with a foundation form, followed by two long forms, left and right sides. Dependant on the Style of Tai Chi a student can then progress to another level of Tai Chi, by practicing partner work as experienced in The Dance of Equality. In the Yang Family the Dance of Equality, is regarded as the highest form to master.

The main challenges for a student in learning Tai Chi in the modern world, is that a lot of the traditional knowledge has been lost. This being due to original forms being modified and the speed of learning has increased. But most importantly, the old school teachers are not so many these days. Don’t get me wrong they still exist, as there are some amazing teachers out there, you just have to find them.

The big challenge for any Teacher is trying apply progressive learning, which becomes difficult if students don’t take up weekly practice. There are many reasons why students do not practice and having been a Tai Chi teacher for over 40 years, I have heard all the possible reasons not to train.

So here is my advice to you if you want to truly learn Tai Chi.

  1. First, find a teacher that you feel will understand your type of learning skills and understanding of movement.

  2. Don’t expect to be able to make an instant decision if Tai Chi is right for you in such a short period of time. Give it time, try leaning a complete small foundation form first, then and only then will you be able to make the correct decision.

  3. Don’t expect to keep up with the class, if you are not practicing as your memory will only last so long and you will inevitably become dissapointed. Try practicing two to three times a week and put the excuses aside. Solo practice is where you will achieve good Tai Chi. I and you will discover many things about yourself. It will bring out the best in you.

  4. Try not to compare yourself with other students. This is your Tai Chi, so personally, how far are you prepared to go on this life changing experience.

  5. Finally, be kind, humble and patient with yourself and others.
